Lifunga Girls' Secondary School (LGSS)
The mission of Lifunga Girls' Secondary School (LGSS) is to educate young women in the rural Kenyan community that borders Uganda to the east. Emerge assists the Lifunga community with operation of their school, the second of its kind in their community. What makes LGSS unique is that it welcomes girls living in poverty, girls who could not afford to go another public high school in the area, including those whose middle school education and performance were affected by poverty.
The school opened in 2010 with two classrooms, 40 young women - ranging in age from 13 to 24 - and six local teachers. In 2011, a new freshman class of 35 entered LGSS increasing the total student population to 80. Emerging Humanity provides each girl with all the books, notebooks and calculators she needs to study. We fund the lunch program to ensure that the girls get the nutrition they need to learn and prosper. We make the school fees and cost of their uniform as affordable as possible for their income level.
How you can help
Below are donations you can make to help the community sustain the school and continue to provide the girls with the learning materials and resources they need.
Sponsor a girl each year or for the next four years, at $350 per year, which covers the costs of books, learning materials, school fees, and the school lunch program.
- Make a financial contribution towards school operational costs, which include teacher salaries and meeting the growing infrastructure needs.
- Donate sanitary pads to the girls of the school who cannot afford to buy their own.
