Help one of the students of Lifunga Girls' Secondary School (LGSS) accomplish her dream of attending and graduating from high school. Meet some of the girls. Hear their stories. Then, consider sponsoring a student for one, two, three, or four years of secondary schooling, at $350 per year. The annual cost of sponsoring a student includes books, learning materials, school fees, and the school lunch program.
Meet Lillian

Nineteen years old. Orphan. Mother of one. Lillian lost both of her parents while in primary school which resulted in her missing several months of class. Despite her struggles, Lillian managed to receive a passing grade on her primary school exit exams (KCPE - A nationally enforce exam that determines whether or not 8th grade students will continue on to high school). Unfortunately, because of her desperate situation she could not afford to advance to high school. In addition to loosing her parents, Lillian has no living grandparents to help support her and her child.
Lillian's favorite subjects are math and science and, when not studying, she likes to play soccer. One day, Lillian hopes to become a nurse.
Meet Judith

Eighteen years old. One of five children. Judith's family struggles to send their children to school and provide them with enough food. She and some of her siblings had to stop going to school because their parents could not afford the fees.
Before attending LGSS, Judith had been out of school for two years. During that time, her least favorite part of the day was morning because she had to watch other students go to school while she stayed home. All the while she still had high hopes of some day going to high school. When she was accepted to LGSS, she was beaming with joy and gratitude.
Judith loves singing and reading poetry, mostly to her adorable audience - her younger siblings. Some day, she wants to be a nurse and help support her family.
Meet Elector

Elector is a 20-year-old student in the freshman class at Lifunga Girls' Secondary School. Just days before starting at LGSS, she unexpectedly lost her only child. Devastated, but determined to attend school Elector showed up and is now at the top of her freshman class. She wants to become a doctor to help sick children.
At the end of 8th grade (nearly six years ago) Elector was accepted to a secondary school, but was unable to afford the uniform and school fees. Still eager to make something of herself, she traveled to a nearby city where she studied tailoring - a cheaper alternative. She returned to her home village and became a tailor to earn money to help support her and her mother, but never let go of her dream of going to secondary school. Now that Elector is in school and not able to contribute as much money to her already poor household, she is desperate for a sponsor to help pay her school fees.
Meet Mildred

Seventeen-year-old Mildred received one of the highest scores of the students at LGSS on her primary school exit exam (KCPE - used to determine entrance into high school). But, was not able to continue her schooling because she had no money. Mildred is a total orphan. She lost both of her parents and one of her siblings to AIDS over the course of two years. After primary school she was sent away to work as a house girl to earn money for herself and her five brothers and sisters.
Word traveled about the opening of LGSS to Mildred. She completed an application and, with the help of a former teacher, submitted it to Emerging Humanity. But, because Mildred no longer had a home or a place to stay, Emerge struggled to find her. After weeks of visiting homes of relatives and talking with the villagers, we finally connected with Mildred. She is now studying in the freshman class at LGSS and dreams of going to University and becoming a doctor to help others and financially support her siblings.
Because Mildred lost both of her parents and her family got separated, she currently has no home and no money. She is a bright, determined young woman who needs help paying the annual school fees so that she can graduate from secondary school and have a better life.

All of the girls at LGSS, ranging in age from 13 to 24, were unable to attend the other secondary schools in the area because of many reasons. Poverty, lack of government funding, high school fees, and a limited number of schools in the area are just some of their struggles. LGSS exists to help educate the many girls who are victims of these struggles.
